A Mother’s Legacy
May 7, 2018
The following was written by Patty Warren, Vice President of Team Services, located in Ronald Blue Trust's national office in Atlanta, Georgia.
Sunday will be my first Mother’s Day without my mom. She passed away peacefully on December 26, 2017, shortly after celebrating her 90th birthday. As I reflect back, it’s clear to see that her life was one of quiet, steady impact. She was a devoted and dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, as well as a terrific cook and good friend to many.
On top of all those things, she was also a working mom in an era when working outside the home was more the exception than the rule. As a teacher, she impacted the lives of third graders for more than 25 years. Yet, despite her busyness with work and her involvement in our local community, Mom was always there for us. She was a strong supporter of all things family and had a heart to serve. Whether it was mending our torn garments (a lost art to be sure!), easing the burden of laundry and dishes when visiting her grown daughters, or constantly cheering us on, she knew with absolute certainty that we could accomplish anything we set our minds on. Throughout everything, Mom was always in our corner.
Looking back on my own life, I realize there are many lessons I learned from her that I wasn’t even aware of. She taught me how to balance the demands of a career with the amazing love and devotion a mom has for her family. She showed me how to stand quietly behind the scenes to serve and support when needed but to also step back when the kids were ready to fly. Mom was always fully present during precious family time and showed me, by example, the importance of prioritizing things like family meals together, which is something that my husband and I still strive for in our home.
I, too, am a wife, the mother of two (amazing!) grown children, and a mother-in-law, and I’m now blessed to be Nana to two of the sweetest little girls the Lord ever created. As I think about Mother’s Day this year and the legacy my mom left behind, my prayer is that, through God’s grace, He would help me be a woman of impact that others would desire to emulate, both within my family and for His Kingdom.
For those of you who are moms, I wish you a very Happy Mother’s Day on behalf of Ronald Blue Trust! For those of you whose moms are still with you, it’s a good day to give them a great big hug and let them know how much you love them. Mother’s Day is a wonderful chance to stop and appreciate everything that our hard-working mothers do to make their loved ones’ lives the best they can be, both now and for future generations.
