Is He Calling You?
The following was written by Kerry Mallory, a Private Wealth Advisor located in Ronald Blue Trust's office in Atlanta, Georgia.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV)
“He is no fool who gives that which he cannot keep, to gain what he cannot lose.”
– Martyred missionary Jim Elliot
January 8 was the 61st anniversary of the murder of Jim Elliot and four other missionaries by the Auca people in the jungles of Ecuador. They were trying to reach this violent tribe with the gospel of Jesus Christ. When Jim Elliot was killed, he was a 28-year-old husband of three years and father to a young child. Many newspaper headlines at the time saw this as a senseless tragedy—the missionaries’ lack of results and brutal deaths were a failure by the world’s standards.
But God had a plan for Jim Elliot and his friends that went far beyond their short lives. Their deaths spurred many others to witness to this lost tribe in the jungle. Several family members later even lived among the tribe, demonstrating forgiveness and love to those who had killed their loved ones. Within a few years, most of the natives had become followers of Jesus and renounced their violent ways. In the end, God used this tragedy to change hearts and leave a legacy that continues to inspire.
What is God calling you to do?
While God may not want you to go to the jungle like Jim Elliot, He is certainly calling you. Perhaps it is to replace old priorities with Kingdom priorities or to be a better steward of your finances. Perhaps it is to give more generously of your time, talents, and treasure. Maybe it is to have more balance in your life. Whatever you feel God is calling you to do, now is the time to act. As Jesus Himself reminds us, “Blessed are those who hear the word of God and obey it” (Luke 11:28).
How do you know this calling is God’s will for your life?
First, remember that God never desires you to do something that is contrary to His Word. So, if you are uncertain about whether the calling is from God, then test it against scripture. You should also frequently talk with God in prayer, asking Him to reveal His plans for you. Often the Holy Spirit will give you peace about a decision that is from Him. In addition, I have found that God shows me His will by removing obstacles and opening (or closing) doors.
Finally, it is important to seek guidance from other believers. Throughout my life, God has used other godly men and women to reveal or confirm His wisdom to me. Join a small group or talk with a Ronald Blue Trust advisor to find help and accountability.
As you seek God’s will in 2017, ask yourself: Am I listening for God’s calling in my life? What is He leading me to do this year? Am I doing all I can to confirm it is God’s will for my life? Am I actively praying for God to use me and my family for His glory?
As you work through these questions, may you follow God’s leading and enjoy a year filled with purpose and impact.
