Living Out Our Mission: John
February 25, 2019
“Let’s go.” That was the response John* and his wife had after they went on a vision trip to a country on the other side of the globe last November. In the middle of a business career in investment management, John was surprised by the burden he felt to uproot and leave behind the familiar to be a part of the work God is doing with unreached people in Southeast Asia.
A Ronald Blue Trust investment team employee for four years, John plans to leave his position and career in the coming months to move to a rural part of Southeast Asia for full-time missions ministry targeting unreached people with the gospel through Bible translation in heart languages, evangelism, discipleship, and partnering with nationals in church planting. John and his family will be joining a project in Southeast Asia with a team already on the ground working on Bible translation, a project that can take 15 to 20 years.
“I am grateful to work for a company that supports and encourages people to pursue their passions in ministry,” John says. “As much as I’ve enjoyed being a part of this team, I am burdened to go, and they understand and give their complete support.”
John’s family had a heart for missions but never imagined they would be the ones to go. “Our hearts were drawn to the lost people of Southeast Asia while sitting in the audience of our local church’s missions conference in 2016. My wife looked at me on the way home and asked, ‘So, what did you think about the presentation?’ I was surprised at how open we both were to the idea of going,” he says. “We had been interested in missions but never considered it a reality for our family. However, the Lord impressed on our hearts to go visit, and we saw the need for people to translate the Bible and share the gospel in people’s heart languages. He really moved our hearts to be a part of what He is doing there.”
John and his family are being sent by their local church in partnership with Biblical Ministries Worldwide (BMW), a mission agency dedicated to advancing the glory of God through the gospel by planting churches in every community. John’s family will be involved in a specific project that is targeting five specific unreached people groups in a country in Southeast Asia.
With over 700 different languages and dialects, some of which do not have a written language, much less a Bible translation, the need is great in the specific country to which they will be going. Many have never heard about the free gift of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ or read the Bible. While the country claims to be tolerant of various religions, it is predominantly Muslim, and animism runs deep in the people’s worldview. There is concern the country will restrict access for religious workers in the future and will require creative access.
To prepare for their assignment, John and his wife are doing doctrinal training with their home church pastoral staff and plan to attend Radius International, a 10-month cross-cultural adaptability and language acquisition training program for frontline missionaries. They intend to enter the field in the fall of 2020.
Ronald Blue Trust will miss John’s talent and presence around the office, but we are so excited to see how the Lord will use him and his family for His glory in the years to come.
