Trust Services and SIMPLIFY
The following was written by Russ Crosson, Executive Vice Chairman and EVP of Ronald Blue Trust.
11-15-3-20-17. Lottery ticket numbers? No. The code to my safety deposit box? No. These numbers are the time and day I received a call that gave me a ‘mortality check.’ A week prior, I had gone to the dermatologist for a ‘full body skin scan.’ My wife Julie goes every year and thought it might be good for me to go along with her. As I was driving to a client meeting on March 20, my phone rang at 11:15 a.m. The dermatologist calmly shared that, of the two spots they had biopsied, one was melanoma. I was not prepared to hear the “M” word.
As I made it through the rest of my day’s appointments, I had the humbling thought that I might not be here by the end of 2017. I could only think about two of my friends who had melanoma, and both passed away within six months of the diagnosis. In a meeting that afternoon with other leaders in the company, I found myself not really mentally present. I figured I would not be here in six months so they would have to lead without me anyway. I remember thinking that if this was my time to go, I was okay with that, and a distinct calm and thought of ‘no regrets’ came over me.
God has been immeasurably faithful as I have navigated this period of uncertainty. I had surgery to remove the spot on March 27 and go back every three months for follow-up scans. The last two checkups have been clear!
Although I have an eight times greater chance of melanoma returning, by God’s grace, it was the best diagnosis I could have received. I’ve learned a lot this year. Receiving an unexpected ‘mortality check’ can do that. It can open our eyes to what is most important in life and cause us to reflect and reset. In my case, that reflection has strengthened my resolve to continue to live generously and purposefully with a focus on people and my relationship with God. In short, I’m striving to continue to live a life of NO REGRETS.
As we approach the end of another year, I want to assure you that everything Ronald Blue Trust does to assist you with your financial life is to help you toward the goal of living with NO REGRETS. A couple of Bible passages have reinforced this message for me.
(AMP) says, “Therefore see that you walk carefully [living life with honor, purpose, and courage; shunning those who tolerate and enable evil], not as the unwise, but as wise [sensible, intelligent, discerning people], making the very most of your time [on earth, recognizing and taking advantage of each opportunity and using it with wisdom and diligence], because the days are [filled with] evil. Therefore do not be foolish
thoughtless, but understand
firmly grasp what the will of the Lord is.”
Life is about purpose and people. Our advisors can help you live life with greater purpose and meaning, by focusing on your family and friends and building spiritual and social capital, not just financial capital.
1 Timothy 6:17-19
(NASB) our firm verse states, “Instruct those who are rich in this present world not to be conceited or to fix their hope on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly supplies us with all things to enjoy. Instruct them to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is life indeed.”
Our advisors can help you draw financial finish lines and live wisely with a sense of extravagant generosity and involvement in good works, so that at the end of your life you have no regrets.
I love our company’s purpose statement, which is “to help clients make wise financial decisions, live generously, and leave a lasting legacy.” This mission is one of the primary reasons we transitioned to a trust company structure during 2017 – a construct that allows us to better serve you, your families, and future generations. In upcoming newsletters, I will unpack each component of this purpose statement.
For now, I hope that as you celebrate the holidays and set goals for a new year, you find time to reflect on what will bring you greater purpose and meaning in 2018. Ronald Blue Trust is honored to be on the journey of assisting you with not only your money, but also dealing with life issues so you can have NO REGRETS.
Merry Christmas & Happy New Year,
